Cat

A ginger cat in POSTAL 2.

Cats are an animal featured in the POSTAL series. They are an non-player character featured in every installment in the franchise excluding POSTAL and including the film. Due to their ubiquity in the games, the controversy they generated, and the humorous nature of their role, they have become popular icons of the POSTAL series. The ability to use cats as silencers, originating in POSTAL 2, has become one of the games' most well-known features.

POSTAL 2[]

Cats first appeared in POSTAL 2. They are some of the most prominent animals, appearing all over Paradise. They are easily scared, running away every time there is a gun battle, or even if a person or dog is nearby. Cats can be attracted by the Postal Dude using a Tin of catnip. Cats can be picked up as items, and are also sold at Beast Love. One of the many weird events taking place during the Apocalypse on Friday is that it is raining cats. Raining cats will normally crash to death on the floor; however, if a cat hits a person, they will begin to vomit. In the original A Week in Paradise mod, they will turn into dervish cats instead.

Cats as Silencers[]

SilencerCat

The Postal Dude can pick up cats and equip them as silencers for the Shotgun and the Machine Gun. He can actually insert the barrel in the cat's rear and all the bullets come out of its mouth. After nine shots from any weapon, the silencer cat will be destroyed (the cat will be launched, and if it hits a wall or a person, explodes and dies). When a launched cat explodes on a person it will cause them to puke. People watching the Postal Dude killing someone with a weapon silenced by a cat will sometimes laugh or congratulate him, even the Police, though this is rare and must be timed correctly.

This feature is partially the reason that POSTAL 2 was banned in New Zealand in 2004, with the Office of Film and Literature Classification citing it as animal violence. As a result, dissemination of the game or acquisition of it became a criminal offense in the country, punishable by up to 10 years in prison as well as a fine of 50,000$.

Dervish Cats[]

Dervish

A dervish cat in the hospital, and the Postal Dude being attacked by one.

Though cats are initially shown as harmless, in Apocalypse Weekend they become dangerous after an experiment at the Hospital goes wrong. The dervish cats spin in a similar way to that of the Tasmanian Devil from Looney Tunes, and will attack anyone who attacks them first (though some dervish cats are shown to attack the Postal Dude instantly at the Hospital and the Dog Pound). However, they can be collected by the Postal Dude and thrown at people as weapons by pressing the drop item key.

A large group of dervish cats must be confronted on Sunday at the Dog Pound, when the Postal Dude enters the place to look for his pet Champ.

In POSTAL 2 Complete, regular cats can be turned into the Dervish type by dropping them a Catnip and collecting them afterwards. There's also a rare chance to encounter them before the weekend.

Paradise Lost[]

Cats in Paradise Lost can now be sold for 10 dollars each to a Cash 4 Cats vendor. Selling 30 cats to these vendors unlocks the Rich on Reddit achievement.

Postal III[]

P3 cat

Cats (specifically, the dervish version) return in Postal III, this time infected with AIDS and syphilis. They are a throwable weapon, turning into tornados when they land. In addition, they can again be used as silencers, but only on the M16, and can also be used with the Rocket Launcher or as Grenades.

POSTAL 4: No Regerts[]

Cats in POSTAL 4: No Regerts are used similarly to the previous games, once again utilized as silencers. In this game, the new ability to use cats as homing rockets is used for the first and, currently, only time in the series. The Postal Dude can also turn into a cat.

POSTAL Brain Damaged[]

Cats in POSTAL: Brain Damaged are black and white with yellow eyes, making their first appearance in "American Dream Gone Wrong" as non-player characters. They cannot be used as silencers, marking the first time in the series that this is impossible (excluding POSTAL, where cats do not appear at all). Instead, however, they serve as the primary ammunition of the Pussy Blower. If the player holds the left-click button, all cats in line of fire are suctioned back up into the machine to be used once more. Cat NPCs can be destroyed to recive an item that gives 1 health and 1 armor.

Dead Cats[]

Unlike the previous entries, "Dead Cats" are a unique inventory pickup. They can be used in similar fashion to their living counterpart.

Trivia[]

  • Cats on silencers dying after nine shots is a reference to cats having nine lives.
  • It is unexplained how the Dervish Cats migrated to Catharsis from Paradise over the weekend.
